A synthetic tooth root replacement is called a dental implant which is used in prosthetic dentistry to serve as foundation for restorations that look like a tooth or a group of teeth. There are different kinds of dental implants whose major classifications are osseointegrated implant and fibrointegrated implant. Ancient implants like the subperiosteal implant and the blade implant were typically fibrointegrated. The most famous and widely accepted implant is the osseointegrated because of the discovery of Swedish Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark that titanium can be joined into the bone when osteoblasts grow on and into the rough surface of the implanted titanium. This gives a structural and useful tie between the living bone and the titanium implant.
