Dental “implants” SHOULD be covered under a regular health insurance plan. When one needs an implant it is because one or more teeth is missing. This is not a cosmetic issue but a health issue. With a missing tooth/teeth there can be bone loss, ask any dentist, which can cause other health problems. Since when is your mouth considered seperate from other parts of your body. Insurance covers knee replacements, hip replacements, stents, etc. Every dentist will tell you a healthy mouth is essential to a healthy life. There are far too many people suffering from tooth loss and can not afford the implant and/or the procedure. Dentists go to school for many years at great cost to learn their trade, just like a medical doctor does, and is entitled to be justly compensated. If a medical doctor can bill an insurance company for their services, so should the dentist. When is someone from the dental profession going to stand up and convince these insurance companies that it is in their best interest that by covering dental implants, they will end up having a much more healthy customer and save money in the long run. Let the patient pay for the abutment(s). Everyone benefits. More business for the dentist, cost savings to the customer, and ins. companies saving money in the long run with healthier customers.
